Born as Lionel Crabb but perhaps best known to those who knew him, “Buster” Crabb and more specifically what became of him, is one of the most intriguing, if grim, unsolved mysteries in recent British history. A Russian warship of a new design arrived in an English port and it was theorized that there was an under hull hatch which could be used to release a novel submarine of a type unknown to the English Navy.
On the orders of MI.5 Buster was employed to use scuba gear and take photos under the hull to see if there was anything secret there.
The Russians were expecting a frogman and were on high alert and probably saw the bubbles breaking the surface, as Buster went by underwater, at night and sent divers in to catch Buster – which they did and Buster was never seen alive again.
A headless body in a divers frogman suit was recovered some time later and it was assumed to be Buster’s body – but the whole episode was cloaked in secrecy and nothing came out of it, except that.
