An incident on Fraser Island near Queensland, Australia in the late-2000s is one of the most intriguing contact cases of recent times. One that, as we might expect, leaves us with many more questions than answers.

The account is one that has several loose ends for various reasons. One that not only featured an intriguing UFO sighting but also close, if limited contact with a strange group of apparent extraterrestrials, contact that was, even in UFO circles, very strange, to say the least.

The account comes to us through a report submitted online by one of the four witnesses, and while we should perhaps treat it with a small pinch of salt, it is intriguing and worth examining, nonetheless.

Furthermore, as we shall see, the incident is but one of many strange sightings that have occurred in Australia during the opening decades of the twenty-first century.

A Strange Glow That Cut Through The Sky Like Pac-Man

In the early hours of 27th April 2008, a group of vacationing university friends decided to spend the last night of their holiday on Fraser Island in Queensland, Australia. By around 4:30 am, most of the group were sleeping, but four of them, including the person who submitted a report of what would be one of the strangest nights of their lives.

They had made the decision to stay awake in order to watch the sunrise over the water, which they figured would happen in around half an hour. At the moment, the skies were still dark, with the only light coming from a half-moon that was occasionally covered with clouds. It was the four friends were laying on the sand when one of them noticed something strange overhead. It appeared like an “unusually bright star”, to begin with, but the friends knew straight away it was something strange.

As they discussed what the aerial anomaly might be, they came to the conclusion that it was definitely not a star, not least as it was below the clouds. In fact, the more they looked at it, the more they realized it was “unusually close to the horizon”. They contemplated if it might be a lighthouse but quickly dismissed this idea, certain there were no lighthouses in that direction. It was, they suggested, a helicopter, although it appeared to be hovering for quite some time if it was.

Then, the light simply disappeared, as if it had been turned off. Perplexed but not concerned, the group quickly forgot about the light and went on chatting waiting for the sunrise. Then, however, it reappeared. This time, though, it was much higher than it was previously. After a moment or two, the curious glow moved “in a right-up-right motion”, similar to how you would imagine Pac-Man moving in the electronic game. Immediately, all four of the witnesses realized they were watching something truly out of the ordinary.

“It’s Coming Right Up Here!”

The four friends excitedly began to exchange ideas on just what they were watching, a slight sense of uneasiness also entering the atmosphere. As they did so, the light made several more turns coming down at an angle, and eventually coming to a stop where the water met the horizon. They watched as the “white circular orb” appeared to change shape, seemingly becoming more elongated while also changing color to green before going back to white. Then, the object “projected itself”.

The witness would describe this as when a light in a nightclub happened to shine straight at you, or as being similar to a laser pen. What they all knew for sure was that the light was heading straight toward them, and it was doing so “at an incredible rate”. The main witness attempted to keep his focus directly on the object. However, suddenly he felt as though something had “whizzed” past them. The next thing he realized, the light appeared to be directly on, moving up and down over his eyes.

As he adapted his focus he could see the object now appeared like a gray orb and was moving a short distance above the water until it finally reached the beach where they were standing. As it did so, it slowed down dramatically. Despite this, the four friends were now becoming quite terrified at what might happen, with the main witness calling out that the object was “coming right up here”.

As he shouted this, the four friends began to step backward in an effort to avoid the oncoming aerial anomaly.

They Might Be Aliens!

As they did so they suddenly became aware that the object appeared to be completely silent, not making a single sound. They also noticed that there appeared to be an “electrical charge in the air”, something they suspected was connected to this curious craft. The witness described the object in his report as looking “similar to a disc only flipped up like a tire or snail shell”. He would elaborate that although he could see the definite outline of the object he couldn’t see through it, stating his belief that it appeared “cloaked, similar to the Predator” movie.

By this stage all four of the friends were almost frozen with fear, occasionally taking an unsure step backward. Eventually, the object came to a complete stop. Slowly, the witness reached for their camera in order to snap a picture of the bizarre craft. However, before he could so do, the object’s outline appeared to disappear.

A moment later, a “very bright pulse of light” flashed from above and lit up the entire beach. The witness elaborated that the light was “very quick” that “could’ve been missed if you blinked”. Following the pulse of light, “the energy in the air dropped”, and the object vanished. Then, in the witness’s words, “everything became VERY strange”.

To begin with, the four friends began to chatter excitedly about what the object was and where it had vanished to. Then, after several seconds, they noticed a strange group of people standing around 100 yards away from them on the beach. The group froze. Each was thinking the same thing. Just how had the mystery group of people arrived on the beach without any of them noticing? The only path to where they were standing came from behind them meaning they would have had to have passed the four witnesses. On the other side were thorny bushes and woodland with a campsite several miles away. What’s more, the four witnesses were fairly certain that the group had not been there previously.

It was at this point that the main witness suggested to the others that the group of people might not be people at all – they might, he offered, be aliens.

Strange Robotic Movements And Blank Faces

The group continued to watch the group, every now and then one of them throwing up a suggestion as to who they might be and how they had arrived there, the fear that had temporarily vanished returning once more. Despite this, one of the witnesses set out walking toward this suddenly appearing and curious group. After he had taken several steps, the main witness followed, both of them stopping a “stone’s throw away”.

From the closer position, they could see there were eight individuals “standing in two lines, shoulder to shoulder in groups of two”. When one of them called out to the group, three of them turned to face them, but did so “much like a soldier or a robot”. The main witness called out once more, asking, “Who are you? How did you get down here?” However, instead of responding, the figures simply stared at the group with blank faces.

They were each wearing heavy black garments which were surprising to the witnesses given the tropical temperatures. The fact that they remained standing motionless and silent only unnerved the witnesses even more. Despite this, the main witness called out once more, “Where are you from?” This caused another of the figures to turn to face them in the same robotic manner. The witnesses – especially the two standing closest to the mystery group – only became even more terrified.

A Desire Not To Make Contact

The two witnesses standing closest to the group could see that this recently turned figure appeared to be holding some kind of “small blue light”. He had turned toward the ground, as if looking for or even photographing something. In fact, the witness stated in his report that the best way he could describe this object was as the LCD display of a digital camera.

As they contemplated what was happening, one of the figures turned back away from them into the position they had originally been facing. At this point, the main witness and his friend decided to head back and rejoin the other two members of the group. When they arrived, they began discussing just what they had seen. However, several moments later, they all stopped dead as they realized that one of the figures was making its way toward them.

At first, the group feared the figure was approaching them. However, as they got closer, they could tell that his course would take them just in front by about 30 feet and that they were not his target after all. They remained where they were, quiet and watching these most strange events unfold. The closer the mysterious figure came the more he appeared as though it was “running in very short strides” and was “chopping his feet behind his body very quickly”.

Bizarrely, as the figure passed in front of them, he raised his hand slightly and moved it in front of his face, as if waving toward the group in greeting. When he did so, the group could see that he appeared to be wearing “big gloves” on his hands.

At this point, one of the four friends set out toward the figure in an effort to get closer. As soon as he did so, however, the figure turned around and went back in the direction he had just come, clearly eager to avoid any close contact with any of them.

At this point, two of the witnesses said they had seen enough and left the beach in order to join the rest of the group. The main witness and his friend (who had approached the figure) sat down in the sound and contemplated just what had happened.

By the time the sun eventually came up the remaining two witnesses could see that the strange group had gone.

Just One Of Many Australian UFO Sightings In 2008

The fact is the Fraser Island encounter was just one of many UFO sightings to unfold over Australia in 2008. On the 6th May, for example, 70-year-old Lawrie Fuchs and his 69-year-old wife, Gwen, were driving back to their hometown of Elliott from Queensland when they noticed a strange object in the sky overhead. [1] Even stranger, they claimed that the object “swooped” down on their vehicle.

They estimated the object was around 20 feet wide and passed over their vehicle at such speed that the force from it forced their car into the middle of the road. They further described the object as a “dark, silvery flash” and made a “loud sound” as it went over the top of their vehicle. Interestingly, only the previous week in Tennant Creek, a local resident, Alan Martin, reported seeing a similar silver, disc-shaped object that also appeared to dive toward him, causing him to run into the woodland in an attempt to lose it.

Although the location is not known, several weeks later, on 1st August, an unnamed witness was taking pictures of his dog outside when he noticed that a striking rainbow had appeared in the clouds overhead. [2] He turned his camera to the aerial display intending to capture several pictures of it. As he was looking through the viewfinder of the camera he noticed a strange “dot” just to the side of the rainbow. At first, he thought it was a plane. However, when he realized that it wasn’t moving but was completely stationary, he realized it was something altogether out of the ordinary.

He continued to watch the spherical object for around 15 minutes, amazed by the fact that it remained completely motionless. He attempted to see it with his naked eye but was unable to do so. By the time he looked again through the viewfinder, he was no longer able to find it. When he later viewed an enlarged picture of the object he had captured on his camera, it appeared there was some kind of energy shimmer surrounding it.

Unintentionally Captured Dark Discs

Several weeks later in the Northern Territory on 23rd August, several sightings of “dark discs” were reported. [3] One particularly intriguing sighting was witnessed by 52-year-old Roger Perner, who was taking pictures of eagles in Timber Creek near the Victoria River. When he examined the picture a moment after taking it, however, he noticed a strange, dark disc in the background. He immediately dropped the camera from his view and scanned the sky in an attempt to locate the aerial anomaly but was unable to locate it. He estimated that the object was many miles away but was still more than clear in the photograph, suggesting it was a significant size, much larger than an airplane.

On 7th December, a local resident of Avro, also in the Northern Territory, Alan Ferguson was taking pictures of the grey sky as a thunderstorm approached. [4] In total, he took around 70 pictures. When he viewed them later, however, he was amazed to find that in two of them were two dark discs. You can see that picture below.

The objects are well-defined as discs, are black or dark grey in appearance, and appear to be slightly blurred suggesting they were moving with significant speed across the sky. So fast, in fact, that they only appeared in two of the 70 pictures that were taken (with each picture taken in quick succession). What is also of interest, although he has not managed to capture pictures of them previously, Ferguson had on several previous occasions witnessed dark, dot-like objects darting across the sky.

The Bowen Bridge Encounter

As we stated in the opening, this is far from the only strange encounter to have unfolded in Australia. It is perhaps worth our time examining an encounter that unfolded around three years earlier, at around 5:20 am on 27th April 2005 in Otago Bay. According to the account, which comes to us from the Tasmanian UFO Research Investigation Centre, the anonymous witness was making their way to work heading toward the Bowen Bridge along the East Derwent Highway, when she noticed a strange blue light flashing every three or four seconds slightly ahead of them.

At first, she thought the flashing lights were those of a police car, and was about to slow her vehicle. However, when she focused more at where the light was coming from, she realized not only was there not a car, but they were coming from the side of the road. The more she looked, she realized that the source of the light was a strange object that was hovering just above the roof of an old house a little way off the road.

This strange craft was a metallic silver in color and a sphere or pear shape “with what looked like rivets on its surface” and approximately the size of a car. She would further recall that there were two black areas that could have possibly been windows, as well as what appeared to be “patterns or symbols” along its side. A moment or two later, with the witness “freaked out”, she simply pressed down hard on the gas and sped away from the scene.

No Rational Explanation Available

The witness, however, could not forget about what they had seen. She eventually told her husband of the incident and they returned to the location near Bowen Bridge to see if they could see any signs that the strange object had been there. They couldn’t, though, find any such sign, nor could they see anything that might have presented a “rational” explanation for the encounter. Ultimately, she decided to report the encounter, with it eventually finding its way to the Tasmanian UFO Research Investigative Center.

They would interview the witness, as well as visit the location where the sighting occurred. Much like when the witness and her husband had found when they had ventured to the scene, the investigative team could find nothing to explain the sighting. Furthermore, when they checked aviation records, they discovered there was no aircraft at all – at least officially within the vicinity that could have possibly been misidentified.

The investigation would ultimately conclude that the sighting was indeed unexplained, with no other lighting or traffic that could have possibly caused the strange light, as well as the fact that the witness described seeing a solid metallic object, albeit only very briefly.

Only the previous month, at around 8 pm on 13th March over Waroona in Western Australia, a similar encounter unfolded. According to the report, the witness had ventured outside of their property in order to take pictures of the sunset, which on this evening was particularly alluring. They took four pictures in total, two of which featured the crescent-shaped moon. When they checked them on their computer a short time later, however, they noticed something in one of them that they hadn’t seen while taking them.

They could see a strange ball-like light that appeared to be in the sky at a relatively low altitude. Although he wasn’t at all sure what this glowing orb was, they were certain that it wasn’t a star or a planet.

Unfortunately, the picture of this incident is not currently available.

Other Sightings Of Strange Objects Over Australia In The 2000s

While the two encounters we have examined above are perhaps some of the more detailed of such sightings to come out of Australia since the start of the 2000s, they are far from the only ones.

On the evening of 23rd March, 2001, for example, in North Sydney, according to a report from the UFO Society of Western Sydney, a couple were at home in their third-floor apartment when they noticed three suddenly appearing “flashlight-like beams” of light close to their balcony. Intrigued, the couple ventured outside to the balcony and were more than a little shocked to discover a “large cylindrical craft” that was hovering close to their apartment.

The witnesses recalled that the object appeared to be at quite a height but as they could see many details of it, they believed it was particularly large. Of more concern to them, though, was a “sudden, strange, overwhelming feeling” that something ominous was happening, or about to happen.

They watched the object for several minutes before it moved, coming a little closer to their location. As it did so, they were each able to make out further details, with one of the witnesses quickly going to retrieve a pair of binoculars. When they looked through them, they could see the craft in even more detail. It appeared to be a “steely matte gunmetal” color. On the end that was facing them, they could also see “two rectangular shaped” that had eight red lights in two columns of four.

The craft remained visible for a further five minutes or so before it disappeared into the distance.

Picture Captures Disc Over Railway

Three years later, during the day on 15th January 2004 in Whittlesea, another strange object was captured on camera, with the sighting and picture receiving coverage on several media platforms. The picture was taken by a local council worker, Roland Rozario, who had been photographing a level railway crossing in Beveridge, just to the north of Melbourne. When he viewed the picture a short time later, he noticed the disc-shaped object, something he had not noticed at the time.

As we might imagine, there was very much a difference of opinions among those who viewed the bizarre and mysterious craft. While some were insistent that the picture clearly showed a typical disc-shaped craft, others suggested that the object might, in fact, be nothing more than lens flare (although this appears unlikely).

Rozario, who was with another council employee at the time the picture was taken insisted they didn’t “see or hear anything” at the time, despite him taking around 12 pictures in the same direction. This would suggest that the object was visible for a second, at most (given that it was not visible in any of the other pictures) and so would, in turn, explain why neither man noticed it at the time.

Rozario further offered that only seconds after the photograph in question was taken, a train came down the tracks, suggesting that one or more passengers on the train my have also seen the strange vehicle. The council themselves offered no comment as far as what the object might have been but did say they found no evidence that their employee had tampered with the image in any way, adding that it was their responsibility to “pass it on to the government authorities”.

There were others who did voice an opinion on the picture. Peter Blake, for example, a senior forecaster for the weather bureau offered that it didn’t appear to be meteorological in nature, adding that it “almost looks like a plane from the rear”, elaborating that it “certainly is not a weather balloon”.

The Victorian UFO Research Society’s scientific advisor, Bernard Wilson offered that while there were some “interesting aspects” to the picture, they ultimately needed more information before reaching a conclusion on what the object might be. He did state, though, that the “sun reflections from the object and the rails appear to be fairly consistent”, adding that there “appears to be some motion blur to the left of the image”, which would suggest that whatever it was, it was “fast-moving”.

Black Triangles And Vehicles From Another World

On the evening of 23rd August 2004 just outside of Melbourne in Victoria, strange hovering lights suddenly appeared in the night sky. [5] The lights were seen by multiple residents of the city, with some even managing to capture the incident on camera. By 8:30 pm, the lights had reached Pascoe Vale. One of those who witnessed them was Mark and Janine Blease. They managed to capture video footage that eventually appeared on Channel 7 TV Melbourne.

A study of the video showed that the lights were part of two black triangles, each of which looked exactly the same as each other. Furthermore, the video appeared to be genuine and not tampered with. When the two witnesses appeared on the radio station, 3WA Melbourne, they offered that although they were certain they had witnessed something very real, they had no idea whatsoever as to what they had seen or what the object might have been.

According to a news item on Channel 10 TV, a woman from Rosewood in Queensland, Nicole Compton, witnessed an object that she witnessed a vehicle from another world. [6] According to the report, at just before 9:30 am on 22nd February 2006, Nicole was awoken by the sound of her crying child. As she made her way to the youngster, she happened to glance out of her bedroom window and witnessed a “really awesome bright white light”, elaborating that it was “blindingly like white”. Upon seeing it she immediately woke her husband, Matt, who, while a little more skeptical than his wife that the object was something strange, was unable to come up with an explanation for it.

Even stranger, as the glowing object moved through the sky, it remained completely silent, ruling out that what they were seeing was an airplane or helicopter. At one strange, Nicole rang her sister who lived around 20 minutes away to see if she could also see the bizarre light, which she could. A quick check with the military showed that they didn’t have any aircraft in the area at the time and that they too could not offer an explanation for what it was.

You can see a still frame of that object below.

Very Similar Objects Continue To Be Reported

During the day of 6th April 2007 in Moonta, a strange object was captured in a photograph. [7] According to the report, the witness was on a tour of scenic railways, at a little after 2 pm on the day in question when they captured the photograph. Unlike many people in similar situations, the witness noticed the aerial anomaly at the time, although they were uncertain of what they were seeing. After taking the first photograph, they attempted to find the object through their camera once more. However, by the time they had raised and focused their camera, the object was no longer there. According to the research of the witness, there are no nearby airports where the picture was taken, meaning it was unlikely to have been an airplane or helicopter. You can see that picture below.

On 12th May 2009 over a golf club in Queensland, two men witnessed a “mysterious white light shooting through the sky”. Around the same time in Palmerton, a local woman managed to capture a picture of a very similar object. [8] The woman – known only as “Kym” in the report – claimed there were two objects that she described as “discs of light”. Like many people in similar situations, Kym didn’t see the objects at the time she took the picture, only noticing them later when she viewed them.

There were also other witnesses to what were likely the same objects around the same time. According to a report in the Gold Coast Bulletin, a resident of Nerang, Michael Baker, was standing outside a shopping center when he noticed a strange light moving with great speed across the sky. He would describe the object as a “big white streak”. Furthermore, the object appeared to descend toward the ground, changing to blue, and then green before it “broke up with a bit of a sizzle and a spark”.

Yet another sighting occurred near Peregian Beach when Ian Mayes and his 10-year-old daughter witnessed a strange light while they were out walking. Mayes would describe the object as a “bright white light, like a star” which “burned for a few seconds and then fizzled out”.

While some people were certain they had seen an object from another world, an astronomer from the Springbrook Research Observatory, Andre Clayden, claimed that what residents had most likely seen was nothing but a meteor shower.

Alien Sighting In An Unknown Pub!

A particularly intriguing photograph was captured in 2012 by an anonymous man from Minnesota in the United States while he was on vacation in Australia. [9] There is, unfortunately, little information about exactly where the picture was taken, other than it was in a pub somewhere in Australia.

The picture was taken of a person sitting at a table in the respective establishment. However, rather unbelievably, through the window, a figure that is clearly a grey-type alien can be seen. While there is, of course, the possibility that the photograph is nothing but a hoax, the person who submitted it was certain that the person who took the picture and, in turn, passed it to her, was not a person who would involve themselves with such things. In fact, he was happy to remain out of the investigation and simply have his friend submit the picture for analysis.

You can view that picture below and make of it what you will.

Although it is a little less dramatic, there is another sighting from 2012 of a strange object that is worth examining here. [10] According to the report, in Narooma in Dalmeny just north of Narooma, a local resident witnessed a strange object falling from the sky. She claimed she was outside of her home walking her dog at around 10:30 pm when she first noticed the “strange bright orange-red object”.

She would elaborate that it was “coming down dead straight” but that she knew that “it wasn’t a flare, a comet, or a shooting star”, adding that it was “weird”. As the object descended, she was surprised that it remained completely silent and that it looked much larger than anything else you would normally see in the sky.

According to the woman, the object had the appearance of “an upright cigar” that was “burning in the center rather than having a tail”, adding that “there seemed to be flame all around it”. When it disappeared from view she half expected to hear an explosion or see an outbreak of fire. However, nothing of the sort happened, meaning she wasn’t sure if the object had simply disappeared or if it had made a controlled and intentional landing. The incident remains a complete mystery and is unexplained.

Near Misses And Cigar-Shaped Objects

In more recent times, at a little after 9 pm on 19th March 2014 near Perth Airport, a De Havilland DHC-8 was approaching the facility in order to land. They were at an altitude of just under 4000 feet above sea level when the crew suddenly noticed a “bright strobe light” that appeared in the sky directly in front of them. It appeared the light was part of a solid, glowing object. And what’s more, it appeared to be heading in their direction.

At this point, the pilot quickly changed the direction of the aircraft in order to avoid any kind of collision. Ultimately, the object passed them, approximately 60 feet to their side and around 100 feet above them. Due to the close approach, the pilot managed to get a particularly close look at the craft, which he would describe as being “cylindrical in shape” and “grey in color”.

When they reported the sighting to the control tower, they asked if it was possible that the military was operating any drones or other unmanned vehicles in this particular airspace. They were told, however, that this wasn’t the case, and that the radar operators also had no readings on their equipment. The sighting remains a complete mystery but would appear to be very credible.

Several months later at just before 6 pm on 24th October in a suburb of Melbourne named Taylors Hill, an infrared camera recorded what appeared to be seven separate unidentified objects that appeared to be flying together in a rough formation.

According to the witness report, they first noticed the strange object passing over the house and so prompting them to retrieve their camera. After setting it to infrared, the witness managed to record several seconds of footage. He estimated that the object was approximately 650 feet above the ground, and they moved unlike anything they had seen previously.

You can see video footage of that sighting below.

What Is Taking Place In The Skies Of Australia?

What should we make of the encounter on Fraser Island? It is without a doubt one of the strangest, most mysterious, and most intriguing close-contact encounters on record. However, there are several details that are, ultimately loose ends. We might ask, for example, what was the purpose of this encounter, if any? Was the fact that the four witnesses there simply a coincidence?

We might also contemplate whether the appearance of the strange orb-like object and the sudden appearance of the group of mysterious strangers were even connected at all. Might this be a case of two anomalous encounters that just happened to unfold in the same location at the same time? If we accept that some locations are themselves key to the appearance of UFOs and a whole manner of other paranormal encounters. Could that have been the case here? Admittedly, this is pure speculation on our part – but worthy speculation, nonetheless.

That the encounter happened so relatively recently offers the increased chance that one day further information about the encounter might surface, or that some of the other witnesses may one day come forward. Of course, as mentioned at the beginning, there is also the chance that the encounter is not as authentic as we might hope, something which also might come to light as the years go on. After all, it is equally as important to keep such cases in the spotlight to prove the hoaxes or fabricated cases as much as to prove the genuine ones.
